2024 3A Div 1 Region 1 ~ Mock Realignment

This coming Thursday (Feb 1st) UIL will release our 2024-2025 district realignments. The classification cutoffs for the 2024 Reclassification and Realignment numbers are as follows:

Division breaks for Football

6A- 2275 and above

5A-D1 1903-2274

5A-D2 1315-1902

4A-D1 957-1314

4A-D2 545-956

3A-D1 369-544

3A-D2 254-368

2A-D1 181.5-253

2A-D2 105-181.4

1A-D1 61.5-104.9

1A-D2 61.5 and below

When the district alignments are unveiled this Thursday for the upcoming two-year cycle, the landscape will shift, particularly impacting 3A Division 1 and, notably, District 2, home to the Falcons. In this cycle, we will see three teams departing Region 1: Slaton and Muleshoe are moving down to Division 2, while Brock is moving up to 4A D2. Conversely, only one team, Sweetwater, will be transitioning into 3A Div 1 from 4A D2. This adjustment presents a unique challenge for the UIL, as it leaves only 21 schools they realistically can place into Region 1, with 60% concentrated in its southern part of the Region. Historically, the UIL aims to minimize the number of 4-team districts for scheduling and competitive playoff reasons, but achieving this goal in Region 1 this year will prove challenging.

Given these considerations, I've outlined below a projection of what Region 1 may resemble on Thursday when the official UIL realignment is announced. My focus here is on minimizing travel distances between schools within the same district. Though our experience from our two years in 4A reminds us that the UIL's decisions don't always follow the same logic. Just ask Denver City and Perryton, who each traveled 308 miles to face each other in district play!
